Concern Regarding Morning Incident at Bellbridge Primary Car Park
I am writing to express my concern regarding an incident that occurred this morning at Bellbridge Primary School.
Due to significant traffic congestion and the very limited parking options around the school, I briefly parked in the school’s open car park—just for a few minutes—to safely drop off my child. The school car park was open at the time, and my understanding is that it remains accessible until 9:00 PM.
However, while I was away for less than five minutes, the school principal—who was wearing a pink high-visibility vest—saw my car parked and immediately ran to lock the gates without giving me any warning or attempting to speak with me. When I returned, I discovered that my car had been locked inside the car park. Another parent was also affected in the same way, with her vehicle similarly locked in.
When I approached the principal to ask for the gate to be reopened, his response was not only dismissive but also sarcastic. He stated, “We don’t provide a traffic control service,” and added mockingly, “Should we start controlling public traffic too?” I found this behaviour highly inappropriate, especially coming from someone in a leadership role responsible for setting an example within a school community.
I appreciate that schools are not responsible for managing public traffic, but the approach taken was unnecessarily confrontational and lacked basic courtesy. Rather than engage in a respectful conversation, the principal acted in a punitive and unprofessional manner. Eventually, he did open the gate, but only after making me feel as though he was doing me a favour—despite the fact that I was put in that situation due to his own actions.
I am concerned about the message this kind of behaviour sends to our children. If the school’s leadership demonstrates impatience, sarcasm, and a lack of empathy, it raises serious questions about the behaviour standards being modelled and taught to students.
I respectfully request that the school review how situations like this are handled in the future and ensure that communication with parents is conducted in a respectful and solution-focused manner.
