Feeling overlooked and unwelcome

Brigidine presents itself as a Christian school built on values of inclusion, kindness, and compassion. As a parent, this is exactly why I chose this school for my daughter. I wanted her to grow not only academically, but also in character — to learn empathy, respect, and fairness.

Unfortunately, our experience with student services has not reflected those values.

On one occasion, when I came to collect my daughter, no announcement was made, whereas for other minor matters the school gathers students or makes public calls. This made me feel overlooked and unwelcome.

As someone who is not a fluent English speaker, I already find some situations challenging. When there is a lack of support or patience, it increases that feeling of exclusion rather than inclusion.

There were also incidents involving student wellbeing that were concerning. My daughter requested Panadol and was told none was available, yet another student nearby received it immediately. Additionally, after she suffered a significant knee injury before school sports, she requested assistance and a lift pass to access bandages on another floor because student services did not have supplies available. She was told it was “not a major injury” and was not given assistance.

These situations raise concerns not only about fairness but also about student care and safety procedures. First aid supplies should always be readily available, and students in pain or injured should not have to struggle to receive help.

This review is not written out of anger, but out of disappointment. If the school promotes Christian values and inclusivity, those values should be consistently reflected in everyday actions — especially in how families from diverse backgrounds are treated.

It does not matter how long ago these incidents occurred. What matters is that they happened and had an impact.

I sincerely hope the school reflects on these concerns and works toward ensuring all families and students feel equally supported and respected
