Students who disrupt and even commit serious crimes such as assault and arson are given a warning. Students assaulted by others who then defend themselves are punished with suspension and exclusion from activities i.e. camps.
Year 12 this year were to go on an excursion to Jamberoo Waterpark. The school forgot to order a bus. For failing their jobs, the administration suffered no consequences. No-one was fired or even warned.
The principal is simply a joke, she tells crying students to return to class and shows no empathy to the literal children around her.
Students are free to abuse each other however they want: physically, emotionally or in a way far more adult and inappropriate in public.
The treatment of students is also bad in regards to toilets. Toilets are locked during classes and only three toilets are available to the students during this time. Long lines and wasted learning time arise from this.
A ridiculous amount of students also get away with vaping and smoking, filling toilets and outdoors areas in the scent of it.
Hygiene. The school is simply dirty. Students constantly litter without consequence and the chairs are not cleaned with the exemptions of obviously filthy ones. Tables have a plethora of gum underneath and the walls are covered in stains and vandalism.
The teachers are mostly fine although with how often they change, I doubt that will remain true. Some teachers are straight up rude to students, one mocked a 13 boy and implied the boy had a small penis. The boy had done nothing wrong, not that that even matters. Teachers will pick on some students for avoiding completing work but will ignore class disruptions caused by other students. Some teachers also simply get facts on their subject wrong.
And the uniform. Girls are provided with dress pants that have no structure and thus do not wear them. They do not have the option of wearing the boys’ pants unless they wish to be bullied. Girls that wear out-of-uniform pants, are declined excursions at the end of the year for not following school rules. The other option for girls are skirts or dresses, both of which are to cold in winter. Speaking of winter, jackets and jumpers that aren’t from the school’s official uniform is considered out of uniform and thusly punished.
I shall end my rant here.
This school is ineffective and hostile towards its own students. I went there from Yr7-Yr12 and my experience was horrible. I was not bullied or in any serious situations (except for being s*xually harassed) and would not recommend anyone put their child through such a place.
The principal doesn’t do anything in regards to consequences for the people misbehaving. We had 2 lockdowns on 2 consecutive days because of students misbehaving, one throwing rocks at windows and other throwing rocks at someone/someone’s house and which escalated into them pulling out a crossbow and threatening to shoot them.
We have had so many false lockdowns that when these 2 happened none of us took it seriously. My class was talking and laughing at a normal volume because we 1. Didn’t know what it was we were in lockdown for and 2. We have never had a serious lockdown.
There has also been a case of severe bullying of a girl who didn’t deserve it. She was cornered and teased and called awful things but in the end the principal ended up suspending her for 5 days and not the bully’s.
I’d like to add at the start of the year the principal said that she would not tolerate any fights… then she added she didn’t care to know who started it, why it happened or even if you were just defending yourself because she’s not an investigator. Well she’s right, she’s not an investigator but she is terrible principal.
In the warmer months at lunch you have to be on alert as to not get hit with water balloons. And year round you have to be cautious who you walk in front of or near because there’s a likely chance you could get food thrown at you. Yes these incidents have been reported to teachers, no they haven’t really don’t anything.
This year I was hit with 3 water balloons. 1 hit me right in the stomach, it completely soaked me and I had to go to class wearing those soaked clothes.
As someone who doesn’t participate in acts mentioned and generally doesn’t misbehave, the students who misbehave and the teachers who don’t do anything are ruining my time and others at school. The fact that we barely have enough teachers doesn’t help the matter either.
My class is the class down from selective meaning we’re some of the smarter students in our year. Yet we have a science teacher as a PDHPE teacher and a maths teacher as an English teacher. Both which have never taught those subjects before.
The rest of the teachers who teach myself and my classmates however are very good. They are kind, genuinely seem like they like teaching and always go above and beyond to help us learn.
I honestly do not see a reason why you should send your kid to Karabar. Other then a small handful of teachers, the rest aren’t worth the time, the principal doesn’t listen, doesn’t hand out consequences and doesn’t seem to care about the well-being of the students.
(When rating the school I’m rating it on my experience alone)
Went there for 4 years first 2 were great with Mr Turvey as principal but as soon as mrs Shannon came in the school went terrible she’s trying to make it into a private school, terrible terrible lady mr Cunningham was the only reasonable deputy and most teachers don’t deserve there job
Karabar high school is good but with the teachers, it's just terrible! All the school cares about is the uniform and violence... if someone punches another student that student that got punched will probably get suspended just for getting punched.
Let's be honest here I hope this school gets better and gets better teachers otherwise there is no point to this high school. If you can afford private school, choose that but if you can't and choose to send your child to KHS, don't be surprised if you keep getting phone calls from your child asking you to move to a different school.
The school has a few flaws within the learning, however it is much better than any catholic school i have been to. the people i have met are very inclusive and the material in the selective classes are perfect for my learning.
Karabar High school is a mediocre school which is biased and unsupportive. The school focuses on the looks and perceptions rather than academic. For example the school prides on wearing school uniform rather than supporting students within the classroom. The school has an extremely high teacher turnover rate including the year 12 physics class needing to go to distance education due to no teachers, and many classes needing to merge including the year 12 SLR class merging with the year 12 CAFS class during the last term. The school prides itself on performing arts and does not focus on academic achievements including university acceptances and ATAR achievements. Due to the new schools in the region Karabar has lost an even higher rate of teachers as they move to the newer schools in the region as well as the high amount of students moving to ACT college’s to seek a more supportive learning environment.
Students have also been constantly reminded how they are “the worst students ever” during cohort meetings.
