This school has excellent teachers, and the curriculum is becoming more meaningful, engaging, and connected to real life; however, that cannot make up for the constant stress and anxiety created by the environment. I am a student, and I have been bullied throughout my entire time here. Despite making many reports, the bullying never stops. Sadly, even teachers are sometimes targeted, yet the students responsible rarely face sufficient consequences. In class, the level of disruption is often so severe that meaningful learning becomes impossible. Teachers sometimes don’t pay attention or even ignore what is happening, but as a young teenager, it is very difficult to block out hurtful words and physical violence. The bullying at Keira High School can be extremely severe, inflicted by more people than I can count. Even in the hallways, random seniors I have never met before feel free to touch my bag or insult my appearance. As well as the ineffective consequences for bullies, there are inappropriate drawings across the school that make students feel unsafe. While this may be considered “average” in many high schools, the conditions here go further: the hallways are often littered with gum and food, and the canteen meals are oily, lacking nutrition, and very expensive.
The bathroom system is also a serious issue. Only six students are allowed in at a time due to vaping, yet many girls gather in groups and remain there for most of the break. This creates extremely long lines, leaving other girls waiting outside, sometimes in pain. Near break time, teachers often refuse to let students go during class, which means you might be holding on for 20 minutes, and then waiting another 8 minutes or more once you reach the bathroom. In total, girls can be holding their bladder for around 30 minutes something that, if repeated often, can be detrimental to women’s health. On top of this, line-cutting is common, making the situation even more stressful and unfair.
Additionally, during wet weather there are very few warm undercover areas available. The library and the art rooms fill quickly, leaving many students out in the cold with damp clothes. This not only increases the chance of getting sick but also makes the school environment feel unwelcoming.
On the positive side, the assessments are becoming engaging and meaningful. For instance, in English we analyse a song that has impacted us emotionally. Since I am passionate about this, I feel more motivated and inclined to learn. Maths is less exam-focused, and if you get the answer wrong, you can rework it to find the correct solution. This fosters a growth mindset and helps me develop my maths skills more effectively. Some teachers are patient, empathetic, and compassionate. They don’t treat you like a clueless child; instead, they listen attentively and communicate clearly, which greatly improves the learning experience.
I have deep gratitude for these teachers, as well as for the school’s attempts to improve the curriculum and provide a range of activities and events. However, these positives cannot outweigh the unsafe and stressful environment. The cruelty of bullying and the unhealthy conditions make it almost impossible to learn.
I am a Student at Keira Highschool and i am here to say this school has been the worst school I have ever gone too in my entire life.
