TGSHS - A School That Condones Domestic & Family Violence
My child had just started her second year at The Gap State High School in 2024 when my ex-husband orchestrated her forced abduction with his son, from my care.
When I became concerned that my ex-husband may do something on the same day where I wasn't going to allow her back to his care,, I immediately emailed the school, including the Year 8 Deputy Principal, to inform them that it wasn't safe for my child to leave the school unattended, specifically requesting staff to walk with her to her grandmother, who was was waiting for her in the car park adjoining the school (The Gap Village Shopping Centre).
Despite having sent the school an email clearly informing them of a serious personal safety concern regarding my child, (specifically referencing domestic violence), this appeared to be ignored by school staff, because by the time I received a response back, my child had already been forcibly removed from my care, that resulted in a frantic 000 call and police attendance.
Since that time, my child's father has exhibited coercive control over my daughter by telling her she was not going to attend school for up to a week at a time - a period where her friends were greatly concerned about her well-being.
My child herself stated that her father told her she wasn't going to school for a week, to prevent me from gaining access to her, and bringing her home, and not alllowing her to contact family.
Whilst her grandmother and I were both trying desperately to make contact with my child through the school, staff members of school administration actively prevented and made our efforts of any such contact extremely difficult, asking for identification and appearing very uneasy at any such attempt at gaining contact.
My child's abusive father then gave false reports to school staff about me as a parent, (claims i was the abusive parent), that led school staff to become wary and hesitant to facilitate any contact between me, my family members, and my child.
This meant that The Gap State High School became complicit in domestic and family violence being perpetrated by my ex-husband, who has a 20 year history of domestic violence offending against me and my children, as well as a prior relationship, where his ex went into hiding with her son in another state.
I made a report to the school, Child Safety, Queensland Police, and The Queensland Education Department, but as yet, nobody has taken accountability for what happened to my child on the day she was forcibly removed from my care and the home she she shared with me since birth.
I thought schools took domestic and family violence seriously but my experience with The Gap State High School has only proven that they align with family violence offenders and help aid them in child abductions, leading to further abuse.
If you hold your child's safety in high regard, I would very strongly advise you not to enrol your child into a school that has actively aided a domestic and family violence offender.
This school is an absolute disgrace for how it responded to a domestic violence issue and its actions and ignorance has only led to my child suffering further harm and abuse.
I may not have been able to protect my child, but hopefully other parents out there can after becoming aware of how this school responds to claims of domestic and family violence.
Teachers target the same students alot of favourtism
they try and seek any way/excuse so they can punish you like uniform although its a public school trying to be private
don't provide any seating during hourly long assembly's terrible for the students
teachers seem to only be in it for the money dont seem to rlly care for the students learning at all.
i am a currently a student, there are good learning opportunities and the school environment is nice, however the teachers lack understanding towards the students.
Put simply, TGSHS is NOT a private school. We are VERY MUCH a public school. But the uniform regulations and additional rules are getting simply ridiculous, and it appears they are trying to become as similar to a private school as possible. I went there to get an education- and a good one at that- not to be lectured about uniforms, vaping, eshay misconduct and to be continously told about how my personal life/sleep schedule/wellbeing is inadequate. As far as teachers, it is as can be expected, there are the good ones and the bad. Overall, the school offers a good range of programs and the curriculum is acceptable. Personally, it's better than many schools out there, but is far from the best. And to any staff reading this, MORE RULES ARE NOT THE ANSWER! Additionally, there have been multiple instances of bullying against my sibling (who is on the spectrum) and THEY HAVE NOT DONE A THING ABOUT IT! THEIR ANTI-BULLYING POLICY IS TO TELL KIDS NOT TO DO IT AND ISSUE DETENTIONS. WHICH IS ABSULOUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.
As a student at this school I have had the full experience from Year 7 till currently in Year 12. The school has become somewhat of a totalitarian system where they have drawn lines as to where students are allowed to walk in the science block and where they must line up. They typically single out specific groups and give them more punishments and hide it as for their own “well being”. Specifically, they constantly throw threats of expulsion however “we don’t like to use that word” says Head of year 12, we would like to say “alternative pathway to better your future” yet constantly pull students out of class and search through their bags without proper authority. Once a student resisted and said they needed police authority however they grabbed his bag from him and physically restrained him. Yet, found nothing. I understand that there is a vape epidemic in the school as every single bathroom you go into there are multiple students vaping and even smoking weed. I’m not exaggerating I go to this school. However, this does not justify assaulting students on zero basis. It is actually an outrage that students can submit anonymous tips against other students via Stymie which was implemented for cyber bullying however turned into a weapon against fellow students and staff. Stymie has been used to make multiple false rape accusations against peers and has resulted in multiple expulsions and suspensions where no actual evidence could be provided. I would think twice before enrolling in this school.
However i must give credit to some the teachers at this school being some of the best people i have met.
the subject selections aren’t too bad, they give a good range however they don’t put you in subjects you pick sometimes. Additionally the schools only focus is academic results and volleyball achievements, Where are the other sports??? and hpe isn’t mandatory, which means u can’t pick it if u need other subjects for uni. some teachers are good and some are bad. The deputy’s are mean and the principal is mean, the uniform rules think we are a private school. There are some positives and some negotiates
Ok, honestly, in terms of learning and education, it’s really excellent. However, the admin treats the students like trash, and I’m not sayings that just because they told me to fix my uniform that one time. I vividly remember one of the deputy principal’s screaming at my whole grade that we were “The worst cohort she had ever seen” just because less then 80% of students passed maths and English. So yeah, it’s a good school in the sense of learning, however it’s not a pleasant time. I wouldn’t recommend
